Amidst this darkness, Isaac Edward Leibowitz founded the Albertian Order of Leibowitz, a community of "bookleggers" and "memorizers" dedicated to smuggling and preserving the remnants of human knowledge, the Memorabilia. Centuries later, a young novice named Brother Francis Gerard discovers an ancient fallout shelter during a Lenten vigil in the desert. Inside, he finds what he believes to be sacred relics: a shopping list and a circuit blueprint bearing the name of the Order\u2019s founder. Despite the skepticism of his superiors and a rhythmic lashing from Abbot Arkos\u2019s hickory ruler, Francis spends fifteen years creating an illuminated copy of the blueprint.
