In 1920s British India, the colonial city of Chandrapore is divided between the squalid Indian town along the Ganges and the British civil station on the rise above, sharing nothing except the overarching sky. Into this divided world come Mrs. Moore, an elderly Englishwoman visiting her son Ronny Heaslop the City Magistrate, and Adela Quested, the young woman Ronny hopes to marry. Both want to see "the real India," but the Bridge Party at the club only confirms the gulf between rulers and ruled.
