In 1873 Cincinnati, Sethe and her daughter Denver live at 124 Bluestone Road, a house haunted by the ghost of Sethe's murdered baby girl. Eighteen years earlier, Sethe escaped from Sweet Home plantation in Kentucky, pregnant and with a back whipped into a chokecherry tree of scars. A white indentured girl named Amy Denver helped deliver the baby on the Ohio River. Sethe reached 124 and reunited with her three older children and her mother-in-law Baby Suggs, who preached in a nearby Clearing, urging freed black people to love their own flesh. But after twenty-eight days of freedom, schoolteacher arrived with a slave catcher to reclaim Sethe under the Fugitive Slave Act. Rather than allow her children to be taken back, Sethe carried them into the woodshed and killed her crawling-already daughter with a handsaw. She was arrested, and the community turned against her.
