Over the course of a decade beginning in the early 2000s, roughly one million Chinese migrants moved to sub-Saharan Africa, transforming the continent's economic and social landscape in ways both profound and unpredictable. This massive human movement accompanied China's dramatic emergence as Africa's largest trading partner, with bilateral commerce soaring from modest levels to an estimated 200 billion dollars by 2012. Unlike the carefully orchestrated state investments and infrastructure projects that dominated headlines about China's African engagement, these individual migrants operated largely outside official control, driven by word of mouth about a continent offering seemingly unlimited opportunities compared to the cramped, hypercompetitive conditions back home.
