Bach once visited King Frederick the Great of Prussia and improvised a fugue on a royal theme. That act of creative self-reference, music turning back to examine and transform itself, threads through the whole of this work. Three creative minds are drawn into conversation: Bach, whose canons and fugues fold themes back on themselves; Escher, whose drawings have hands that draw each other and staircases that perpetually ascend while never rising; and Gödel, who proved in 1931 that any sufficiently powerful formal system contains true statements it cannot prove from within its own axioms. The common structure in all three is the strange loop, a movement through apparently distinct levels of a hierarchy that secretly curves back to its starting point.
