The central provocation running through this work is deceptively simple: there is no natural foundation beneath the categories of sex, gender, and desire. What presents itself as biological fact, inner truth, or ontological given is actually produced and sustained by the very systems of power that claim merely to describe it. The "heterosexual matrix," a grid of cultural intelligibility presuming coherent and predictable relations among chromosomal sex, culturally constructed gender, and heterosexual desire, does not reflect reality but actively constructs it. Those who fail to conform are not simply different; they are rendered unintelligible, unreal, unlivable.
