Something essential has gone missing from contemporary life, and its name is the Other: the radically atopic, placeless being who cannot be absorbed into the self's economy of mirrors and confirmations. The diagnosis that love is in crisis because of too many choices, too much freedom, and too many options is wrong; it mistakes a symptom for the cause. The real wound is the erosion of genuine alterity. Contemporary society, organised around comparison, consumption, and the narcissistic inflation of the self, has eliminated the conditions under which the Other can appear at all. Narcissism is not self-love; it is the incapacity to encounter anything that genuinely resists the self. Depression, the affliction of the age, follows directly: without the Other, the subject collapses inward and suffocates in its own reflections.
