The Nordic countries consistently top global rankings for happiness, trust, equality, and quality of life, yet the reality behind these statistics is far more complex and contradictory than the international media acknowledges. Denmark leads the happiness charts despite having the world's highest cancer rates, lowest Nordic life expectancy, and a population that saves almost nothing while owing 310 per cent of annual income. The Danes' contentment rests on centuries of territorial loss that turned them inward, fostering extraordinary social cohesion, trust, and a culture of low expectations.
