Neuroscience and psychoanalysis have historically approached the study of mental life from opposing perspectives, one objective and one subjective. For over a century, these disciplines developed independently, each studying the same phenomenon but from fundamentally different observational standpoints. Neuroscience focused on measurable, observable brain processes whilst psychoanalysis explored the fleeting, subjective terrain of inner experience. Recent technological advances in brain imaging, molecular biology, and experimental methods have transformed this landscape, making the inner world of subjective experience a legitimate topic for rigorous neuroscientific investigation.
