Introduction
The Tempest begins with a violent storm that wrecks a ship carrying Alonso, King of Naples, his son Ferdinand, Antonio (the usurping Duke of Milan), Sebastian (Alonso's brother), and various courtiers. The tempest is no natural phenomenon but the magical creation of Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, who lives in exile on a remote island with his daughter Miranda. Through a lengthy exposition, Prospero reveals to Miranda that twelve years earlier, his brother Antonio conspired with King Alonso to depose him, setting Prospero and the infant Miranda adrift in a boat. They survived to reach this island, where Prospero has since mastered magical arts and commands two supernatural beings: Ariel, an airy spirit, and Caliban, the deformed son of the witch Sycorax who previously ruled the island.
