In 1870s Kansas, Dorothy Gael endures sexual abuse from her Uncle Henry while her Aunt Em maintains willful ignorance. Dorothy's trauma manifests as rage and violence toward schoolmates, isolating her further. When substitute teacher L. Frank Baum briefly recognizes her suffering, institutional and social forces prevent intervention. A tornado eventually carries Dorothy into either Oz or madness (the distinction remains deliberately ambiguous), and she spends the next seventy years institutionalized, unable to distinguish fantasy from reality.
