Antoinette Cosway grows up at Coulibri Estate in Jamaica during the aftermath of Emancipation, a white Creole girl stranded between two worlds. Her mother Annette, a beautiful Martinique woman scorned by the English planter class and despised by the formerly enslaved Black population, watches their fortune crumble and their isolation deepen. When Annette marries Mr Mason, a wealthy Englishman, temporary prosperity returns, but it cannot repair the fractures beneath the surface. Mason dismisses Annette's warnings about local resentment with patronising confidence. One night, a mob burns Coulibri to the ground. Antoinette's disabled brother Pierre dies from his injuries. Annette, shattered by grief, is driven to madness and placed in the care of strangers who mistreat her. Antoinette, scarred by the fire and by the moment when her childhood friend Tia threw a stone at her face instead of offering comfort, is sent to a convent school where she finds fragile peace in routine and enclosure.
